Contrary to the claims by the former environment minister Michael Meacher
that there have not been any independent tests on GM crops ("New health
alert over GM crops", August 16), there have in fact been several hundred
published and peer-reviewed safety studies, each demonstrating that current
GM crops are at least as safe as their non-GM counterparts, August 2005 by
Tony Combes.
Conversely, the so-called 'alarming results' of Dr Pusztai's tests in 1998
with unapproved test potatoes fed to rats were subsequently found to be
flawed by the Royal Society, one of Britain's leading independent scientific
institutions.
The maize referred to in the article has now been safely cultivated and
consumed in the USA since 2003.
The biotech companies involved in the development of GM crops are obliged to
adhere to a strict regulatory regime. The recent approval of an
insect-resistant maize by the European Commission followed a lengthy and
detailed analysis by member state regulatory bodies, as well as the European
Food Safety Authority, and these bodies all had full access to the relevant
research studies.
