Hungary to retain ban on GM crops

Hungary will continue to make efforts to maintain its ban on genetically
modified crops (GMO), Zoltan Gogos, state secretary at the Ministry of
Agriculture, told reporters in Brussels, September 2006.

Gogos spoke following a vote in a special committee of the European
Commission, in which a motion seeking Hungary's withdrawal of a protective
clause and give the green light to the import of genetically modified maize
had not been given the necessary majority. The Hungarian government had
extended the ban once already last January and launched an investigation to
see clearly on health hazards.

The state secretary warned that Hungary's position of a complete ban of GMOs
could not be maintained by way of protective clauses in the long run, and
urged that parliament pass a bill to govern simultaneous production of
traditional and genetically treated crops. Gogos added that the proposed
legislation would be stringent and farmers wishing .
