Researchers Review Opportunities Presented by CRISPR-Based Tools in Understanding Plant-Pathogen Interactions

Modern omics platforms have made the identification of susceptible and/or
resistance genes feasible in any species, generating several potential
targets for crop protection. However, the validation of these targets has
been hampered by the lack of a fast, precise, and efficient gene targeting
system in plants. In particular, CRISPR/Cas9 has revolutionized research by
allowing genome editing in prokaryotes and eukaryotes.

Abdellah Barakate from the James Hutton Institute in the UK and colleagues
described the CRISPR/Cas9 system and its applications in gene manipulation.
The team also summarized recent studies that focused on plant pathogens and
discussed the potential applications of CRISPR/Cas9 in studying pest control
and plant-pathogen interactions for plant improvement and crop protection.
