Galactinol synthase (GolS) is an important enzyme that hastens the
production of raffinose oligosaccharides (RFOs) which have vital functions
in abiotic stress adaptation of plants, particularly drought tolerance.
Researchers have isolated the GolS gene in several plants to develop
material resources for generating transgenic plants resistant to adverse
environmental factors.
In a previous research by Agricultural Genetics Institute and partners, the
researchers have isolated a GolS gene from the DNA of rice (named OsGolS).
In their latest study, the isolated OsGolS gene was introduced to maize
using Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. Tests results
indicated that the transgene was successfully integrated in the genome of
the regenerated maize plants. Further analysis showed that the OsGolS was
transcribed into mRNA in maize and was highly expressed.
These results provide a basis for the study of the function of OsGolS in
drought responses and for the development of drought stress tolerant crops.
