Malta is among 10 European Member States that are opposing the marketing of
a genetically modified product, the maize 150, January 2006 by Roberta
Scerri.

Greece, Poland, Portugal, Austria, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Latvia,
Lithuania, Cyprus and Malta are the 10 countries opposing the marketing of
maize 1507.

The European Commission will have to take a decision on whether or not to
authorise the product as the Council of Agricultural Minister is far away in
obtaining either a majority for or against the marketing of this product.

There are 11 other member states that are in favour including the UK,
Sweden, Belgium, France and the Czech Republic amongst others.

The maize 1507 is genetically modified with the Bt trait to make it
resistant to certain insect pests including Ostrinia nubilalis also known as
European Corn Borer and Sesamia calamistis known as the Pink Stalk Borer.
