Swiss Federal Council wants to intensify research concerning neighboring
fields of transgenic and non-transgenic plants, March 2006 translated by
Mark Hucko, Checkbiotech

According to the Swiss government?s answer to a motion from Swiss
Parliamentarian, Mr. Johannes Randegger (FDP/BS ? Party), the funds reserved
for this purpose should be given to the Agroscope Research Institute between
2008 and 2011.

Apart from this, the research should also investigate the question of
coexistence of transgenic and non-transgenic organisms through the research
program, ?Uses and Risks of releasing Transgenic Plants? (NFP), which was
announced last December.

The Swiss government also supports a motion from the social-democratic
faction of the National Council, which demands intensified research
concerning possible health risks caused by genetically modified plants and
foods.

According to the Swiss government, this matter being addressed in the NFP.
In addition, researchers can apply for the standard subsidies of the
National Fund for comprehensive clinical studies regarding GMOs.
