High soil salinity can severely limit agricultural productivity and lower
crop quality, March 2006.

As saline soils are a growing problem in many countries, developing plants
that can tolerate salinity is a key priority. One approach for engineering
salt tolerance is reported in the latest issue of Plant Science by Eun-Ji
Koh and colleagues in the article ?Expression of yeast cadmium factor 1
(YCF1) confers salt tolerance to Arabidopsis thaliana.?

Previous studies have shown that yeast cadmium factor 1 (YCF1), when
introduced to Arabidopsis, allows the plant to grow in the presence of heavy
metals. In this paper, researchers show that Arabidopsis lines expressing
YCF1 are also salt tolerant. According to the authors, this enhanced salt
tolerance is due to the movement of salt ions from the cytosol to vacuoles,
allowing the cell to maintain osmotic balance.
