How are transgenic plants to be cultivated in Germany? The SPD political
party does not support suggestions by the Minister of Agriculture, Horst
Seehofer, who aims to restrict liability for cross-contamination. In order
to safeguard experimental transgenic crops from destruction, fields will in
future be more difficult to find. Translated by Stephan Nyeki and Thandi
Warren, November 2006.

Ears of wheat from experimental crops cannot be distinguished from their
conventional counterparts on first sight. However, they contain more
protein ? thanks to several genes from barley and field beans.

The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety gave the Leibnitz
Institute in Gatersleben permission for this field trial last Thursday as it
represents no danger to humans or the environment.
