Tripling Bt cotton cultivation area to 3.8 million hectare with support of
2.3 million farmers, India emerged leader in Asia in comparison to China?s
coverage of 3.5 million hectare during 2006, announces the annual report
prepared by the US-based International Service for Acquisition of
Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), January 2007.
Combined population of 2.6 billion of India, China, Argentina, Brazil and
South Africa, which is 40 percent of global population, grew 38.2 million
hectare of genetically modified crops during 2006 which comprises 37 percent
of global cultivation.
Global GM crop cultivation increased to 102 million hectares in 22 countries
during 2006, up from 90 million hectare in 21 countries during 2005, ISAAA
reports.
To overcome challenges of global food, feed and fibre security due to rising
population, the ISAAA chair, Clive James strongly opts for GM crops, the
report says.
