GM ban lift sparks economic debate

An end to bans on genetically modified (GM) canola has sparked renewed
debate about whether there is economic benefit from allowing farmers to
plant GM crops.
Farmers' federations in the two states are welcoming the decision to
let moratoria on GM canola expire.

The Nationals Member for Lowan, Hugh Delahunty, says he is expecting
farmers to sow the GM crop next season.

"Because we've seen the dropping of canola production here in this
region for two reasons," he said.

"One (reason is) obviously the drought.

"But secondly, we're not competitive with our overseas competitors."

Geoffrey Carracher from the Network of Concerned Farmers says the
Victorian Government's argument that the decision will boost the economy
does not add up.

"Income will drop because in Canada at the moment Australia are
getting $70/tonne better for our canola than what Canada is," he said.

The New South Wales Government says the decision puts its farmers on a
level footing with overseas growers.
