Australia: First commercial GM crops go in the ground

For the first time, Australian farmers are getting out their tractors
to plant commercial crops of genetically-modified canola.
Growers in New South Wales and Victoria are now allowed to grow the
crops, after their state governments controversially lifted their moratoria
this year.

Evan Ryan, a farmer from Yarrawonga, on the border of the two states,
started planting on Wednesday and says his neighbours are okay with his
decision to go GM.

"Our neighbours know that we're using this technology, we've been
quite open about that," he said.

"If we did have a neighbour who had an issue with it, you know we'd be
happy to talk to them about it, try and resolve that, but the potential for
drift of seed or any sort of pollen or that sort of thing is very low."
