CHITOSAN ENHANCES EFFICACY OF PSEUDOMONAS SP. AGAINST TOMATO LEAF CURL VIRUS

The tomato leaf curl virus (ToLCV) is one of the most destructive diseases
in terms of quantitative and qualitative yield losses. There has been
several researches done but no economically viable management practices are
able to manage ToLCV.

However, a study was recently conducted in India to evaluate the potency of
previously proven potent rhizobacterial isolates against ToLCV in the field.
They used rhizobacterial isolates as well as different formulations of these
isolates and chitosan, an elicitor molecule. It was found that the isolate
Pseudomonas sp. in combination with chitosan reduces the severity of the
ToLCV disease by as high as 90.33%. It also recorded the maximum plant
height, total biomass, chlorophyll content, fruit number and yield over the
diseased control. It was also found that using the bacterial isolate or
chitosan alone was not effective.

The lowest viral load was also observed in plants inoculated with the
combination of Pseudomonas isolates and chitosan. These results indicate
that addition of chitosan has enhanced the biocontrol efficacy of
Pseudomonas sp. against ToLCV.
