STUDY SHOWS CONSUMER PERCEPTIONS AND KNOWLEDGE OF GMOS IN BELGIUM

Consumer awareness, perceptions, and knowledge of GM in Belgium was
investigated by Maggie Jo Pruitt from the University of Arkansas. The
findings will be used to determine the need for different educational
programs on GM products.

The results showed that the consumers recognized that GMOs are developed to
produce higher yield and reduce costs with fewer negative effects on the
environment. Several consumers claimed that the major reason behind the
activism against GM was the fear of monopolistic corporations. Most of the
respondents gave high regard for economic benefits than environmental or
health risks. The consumers also expressed that there is a need for more
efforts on science communication.
