UN: Global Hunger Continues to Rise

The number of hungry people is growing globally, reaching 821 million in
2017 or one in every nine people, according to the United Nation's report on
The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2018.

This is the third year that UN reported about the continuous increase of
hunger worldwide, with current levels equivalent to records a decade ago.
The report also emphasized that there was a slow progress in addressing the
multiple forms of malnutrition, which includes child stunting and adult
obesity, making the health of hundreds of millions of people at risk. These
findings translate into a clear warning that more efforts must be done
rapidly to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030.

Climate variability, which has an impact on rainfall patterns and
agricultural seasons, and extreme climate conditions such as drought and
floods were reported to be the main drivers of the increase in hunger,
together with conflict and economic slowdowns.
