Australian professor throws support behind GM canola

A Charles Sturt University Professor has given the thumbs up to
genetically modified (GM) canola after a five-year trial which he says shows
the potential yield and profit advantages.
Professor Jim Pratley says it is the first long-term study of its type
and he is now calling for a lifting of the moratorium on GM canola in
Australia.

His call comes at the same time as Australia's major food processing
company, Goodman Fielder, has urged authorities to extend the GM ban beyond
next year.

Professor Pratley says Roundup Ready canola consistently delivered
superior weed control, higher yields and oil quality and better profits when
compared to current common canola varieties grown under conventional weed
management systems.
