The Network of Concerned Farmers is disputing an Australian Bureau of
Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) report that genetically modified
(GM) crops will bring huge profits for Australia, saying the figures are
based on assumptions.
ABARE says GM oilseed and wheat crops could add almost $1 billion a
year to the Australian economy over the next decade.
Young district canola grower Juliette McFarlane from the Network of
Concerned Farmers says there is more research to be done.
"They say these figures but there's absolutely no detail about how
they arrived at this enormous amount of money," she said.
"They do say in their report that they have not considered the likely
increase in the cost of growers because there's no information on that.
"So it seems to me that once again they've come up with a figure but
they haven't included the cost for farmers."
