Field studies with genetically modified sugar cane successfully completed in Germany

Field studies with genetically modified sugar cane that tolerates the
pesticide Roundup, begun in April and May, have been successfully completed
by the German seed developer, KWS. At six locations throughout Germany,
multiple characteristics of the Roundup Ready sugar cane were closely
examined and evaluated.
Christopher Ortler (translation)

The field studies were begun this year following evaluation and approval of
the project by the German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food
Security in spite of protests by gene technology opponents.

Effects on the ecosystem

The goal of the field studies was to examine the effects of the genetically
modified sugar cane on the ecosystem in various, different environments.
There were two points of focus in the study. On the one hand, questions
regarding the mechanism of action and phenotypic characteristics imposed by
the inserted gene were addressed. The other point of focus was the effect of
the inserted gene on non-target organisms, especially insects.

During the vegetative growth phase of the plants and continuing up until
harvest, an all encompassing program of measurements and analyses was
carried out. These data will be evaluated during the coming months.

Large scale, commercial production in the USA

Experience from large scale, commercial production of Roundup Ready sugar
cane in the USA shows that there is a high potential for savings of
herbicide and energy used for its application. This enables an
environmentally friendlier and more economical production. Following a
preliminary trial on 1000 hectares in 2007, the planting of the Roundup
Ready sugar cane will be expanded this year to 250,000 hectares, almost 50%
of the total U.S. sugar cane production.

If all goes according to plan, the earliest possible commercial production
of Roundup Ready sugar cane in the EU will be in the year 2015.
