Building waste could be used to grow tomatoes

A study from the University of Portsmouth shows that highly processed building waste could be used to grow tomatoes. The 70-day tomato growth trial reveals that mixing compost with 20% trommel fines could provide enough nutrients in growing plants.
Trommel fines are usually less than 10mm in size and are a byproduct of construction, demolition, and excavation waste. Dr. Muhammad Ali, Associate Professor in Materials and Environmental Innovation, said trommel fines â??consist of small particles of inert and organic materials including soil, crushed rock or concrete, glass, metals, plastics, wood, and insulation materials.â?
Currently, trommel fines end up in landfills as they do not have any other purpose. With the findings of this research, trommel fines have the potential to be repurposed for the benefit of the horticulture and agriculture industries.
